Candida Utilis Protein

Fuyang Starch’s Candida Utilis Protein Project

Shandong Fuyang Biological Starch Co., Ltd. (Fuyang Starch) currently uses most of its evaporated and concentrated corn steep liquor for corn fiber spraying and external sales.

This limits the added value of corn steep liquor and increases the burden on the company’s wastewater treatment system. Consequently, Fuyang Starch has decided to develop downstream products by constructing a Candida utilis protein production project, based on its existing production capacity.

On 13 May, the public notice of the environmental impact assessment documents for its Candida utilis protein project was publicized again prior to the approval.

Project overview

  • Nature: Reconstruction
  • Location: Pingyuan Economic Development Zone, Shandong Province
  • Total investment: USD2.8 million (RMB 20 million)
  • Construction content:
    • The project will rely on the existing corn steeping and pulp system, warehouse, and public auxiliary works of Fuyang Starch.
    • It will also utilize the fermentation system of the existing erythritol production workshop of Shandong Fuyang Biological Technology Co., Ltd. (the parent company of Fuyang Starch, located within the same factory complex).
    • The corn steeping system and the erythritol workshop’s fermentation system will be upgraded.
    • Over ten sets of new equipment will be added, including a forced circulation evaporator, a thick pulp tank, a pelletizing bed, a cooling bed, and a packaging system.
    • Once completed, the existing erythritol product line of Shandong Fuyang Biological Technology Co., Ltd. will be discontinued.
  • Product plan: 30,000 t/a of Candida utilis protein.
  • Key raw materials: 8,820 t/a of 10% corn steep liquor.
  • Labor quota: No new employees
  • Working system: Three 8hr shifts per day, 330 working days per year.
  • Construction period: The project is expected to be completed by June 2025.

Global Bio-Chem Forms Strategic Partnership for Synthetic Biology Innovation

Global Bio-Chem Forms Strategic Partnership for Synthetic Biology Innovation

On 20 May, Global Bio-Chem Technology Group Co., Ltd. (Global Bio-Chem) entered into a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Hefei Hochen Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (Hefei Hochen).

The agreement was signed by Changchun Hongcheng Biochemical Materials Technology Development Co., Ltd. (Hongcheng Biotechnology), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Global Bio-Chem.

The collaboration will see both parties utilize their strengths in synthetic biology to drive the development of Jilin Province’s biomanufacturing industry, with a focus on key industrial applications within the province.

By integrating Global Bio-Chem’s expertise in technology scaling, process optimization, production flow design, and cost control with Hefei Hochen’s capabilities in gene design, strain construction, and metabolic pathway optimization, the partnership aims to advance the industrial application of synthetic biotechnology in the amino acid field, thereby enhancing the market competitiveness of both entities.

In line with the strategic cooperation plan, Global Bio-Chem and Hefei Hochen will establish and jointly operate a synthetic biology pilot platform, utilizing the research center and pilot facilities at Global Bio-Chem’s Xinglongshan production base.

The base’s R&D facilities encompass approximately 10,000 square meters of factory space and workshops, along with four R&D centers dedicated to biochemistry, bio-fermentation, food, and animal protection. Additionally, the base features a bio-fermentation product pilot workshop equipped with seven biochemical pilot facilities.

Global Bio-Chem’s Xinglongshan production base is currently suspended. As reported in the company’s 2024 annual report, Global Bio-Chem has been actively seeking business allies or investors to participate in the operation of its production base.

The company views the strategic cooperation framework agreement and the proposed joint operation of the pilot platform with Hefei Hochen as the initial step toward gradually resuming operations and production at the Xinglongshan base. This initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen working capital in the long term.

Furthermore, the strategic cooperation framework offers a valuable opportunity for all parties to leverage their respective resources and expertise to create mutual benefits and synergies.

Hefei Hochen specializes in integrating synthetic biology with cutting-edge delivery technologies, focusing on the development of bio-based chemicals, specialty amino acids, and high-value active ingredients. The company also develops solutions for beauty products and functional foods using high-value active ingredients and advanced delivery technologies.
