Zhucheng Yuanfa’s Sodium Gluconate Expansion Project

On 14 August, the environmental impact assessment information for 150,000 t/a of high-quality sodium gluconate (SG) project by Zhucheng Yuanfa Bio-technology Co., Ltd. (Zhucheng Yuanfa) was made public before approval.

 

Project overview

  • Nature: Expansion & renovation
  • Location: Xinxing Town, Zhucheng City, Shandong Province
  • Total investment: RMB30 million
  • Construction content: The project will upgrade the existing “100 000 t/a of SG project” by using existing land, buildings and equipment. A new on-site glucose-from-corn-starch section will replace purchased glucose. Sixty new units of equipment, including saccharification equipment, centrifuges, dissolution tanks, fluid-bed dryers, double-effect and quadruple-effect evaporators, will be installed. Shortened fermentation cycles will boost fermenter utilization.
  • Product plan: SG capacity will be expanded from 100,000 t/a to 150,000 t/a.
  • Key raw material: 429,500 t/a of starch slurry (self-produced).
  • Labor quota: 140 employees (no new hires; existing workforce).
  • Working system: Three 8hr shifts per day, 365 working days totaling 8,760 hours per year.
  • Construction period: Scheduled for completion by the end of Dec. 2025.

 

Zhucheng Yuanfa, established in 2014 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dongxiao Bio-tech Co., Ltd., operates two plants:

  • South Plant has a 300,000 t/a of corn starch production line, and a 500,000 t/a of corn starch expansion project is under construction, and the capacity of corn starch (moisture content 13.5 %) in South Plant will be expanded from 300,000 t/a to 500,000 t/a.
  • North Plant has a 600,000 t/a corn starch production line, a 100 000 t/a of SG production line, a 100,000 t/a of high-maltose syrup or 10,000 t/a of maltodextrin production line.

– Erythritol

On 14 Jul., 2025, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced its preliminary anti-dumping decision on erythritol imports from China. The preliminary dumping margin for Chinese producers/exporters was set at 371.62% (with the cash deposit adjusted to 371.53% after offsetting subsidies). The nationwide uniform rate for China was set at 450.64% (with the cash deposit also adjusted to 450.64% after offsetting subsidies). The products in question fall under U.S. Customs tariff subheading 2905.49.4000.

On 2 Jan., the U.S. Department of Commerce initiated anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations on erythritol imports from China.

– Lysine

On 11 Jul., 2025, the European Commission announced a definitive anti-dumping measure against lysine from China. Jilin Meihua Amino Acid Co., Ltd. and Xinjiang Meihua Amino Acid Co., Ltd. were imposed an anti-dumping tax of 47.7%; Heilongjiang Eppen Biotech Co., Ltd., 58.2%; cooperating companies 53.1%; and other companies 58.2%. The EU CN codes for the products involved are ex 2309 90 31, ex 2309 90 96 and 2922 41 00 (TARIC codes: 2309903151, 2309903159, 2309903161, 2309903169, 2309909651, 2309909659, 2309909661 and 2309903169).

The investigation period was from 1 Jan., 2023, to 31 Dec., 2023, and the damage investigation period was from 1 Jan., 2020, to the end of the investigation period. The announcement took effect the day following its publication.

On 23 May, 2024, the European Commission initiated an anti-dumping investigation on lysine from China. On 14 Jan., 2025, it issued a preliminary ruling.

 

– MSG

On 2 Jul., 2025, Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade issued Announcement No. 1914⁄QD-BCT, making a definitive ruling on the first sunset review of anti-dumping measures against monosodium glutamate (MSG) from China and Indonesia. It decided to continue imposing anti-dumping duties for five years. Chinese MSG will be subject to duties of VND3,396,156-6,385,289/t, and Indonesian MSG to VND5,289,439/t. The measures will take effect on 23 Jul., 2025, and remain valid until 22 Jul., 2030. The Vietnamese tax code for the subject products is 2922.42.20.

 

On 31 Oct., 2019, Vietnam initiated anti-dumping investigations on MSG from China and Indonesia. On 22 Jul., 2020, it made a definitive ruling to impose anti-dumping duties of VND 3,529,958-6,385,289/t on Chinese MSG and VND 5,289,439/t on Indonesian MSG, effective from 23 Jul., 2020, for five years. On 23 Jul., 2024, Vietnam launched the first sunset review of these measures.

On 10 Jun., the local environment bureau accepted and publicized the EI report for 2,500 t/a of biosynthetic series products project by Jiangxi Fushine Biotechnology Co., Ltd.’s (Jiangxi Fushine).

  • Nature: Renovation and expansion.
  • Location: High-tech Zone, Jingdezhen City, Jiangxi Province
  • Total investment: USD27.8 million (RMB200 million), with USD0.56 million (RMB4 million) for environmental protection
  • Construction content:
    • Build production lines for L-hydroxyproline, proline, dihydroxyacetone, mycophenolic acid, and DHA.
    • These will share facilities with the existing 1,000 t/a microbial protein production line, reducing its capacity to 200 t/a.
    • The freed-up production time will be used for L-hydroxyproline and proline.
    • The amino acid-based water-soluble fertilizer capacity will decrease from 50,000 t/a to 48,000 t/a.
  • Product plan: 19,200 t/a of microbial protein, 195 t/a of L-hydroxyproline, 1,000 t/a of proline, 5 t/a of mycophenolic acid, 500 t/a of DHA, 800 t/a of dihydroxyacetone, and 48,000 t/a of amino acid-based water-soluble fertilizer.

    • L-hydroxyproline and proline will be mainly sold to Jiangxi Ruyi Technology Development Co., Ltd. (a pharmaceutical intermediate manufacturer) and Hangzhou Kewei Import and Export Co., Ltd. (a pharmaceutical trading company).
    • Dihydroxyacetone will mainly go to Grand Biotech (Nanjing) Co., Ltd. (a biotech R&D company).

    • 18,000 t/a of Long chain Dicarboxylic Acid Flexible Production Line: Leverage existing fermentation tanks and extraction lines, construct a new extraction line to produce 10,000 t/a of sebacic acid, 1,000 t/a of undecanedioic acid, 2,000 t/a of tridecanedioic acid, 2,000 t/a of tetradecanedioic acid, and 1,000 t/a of each of pentadecanedioic acid, hexadecanedioic acid, and octadecanedioic acid.
    • 5,100 t/a of Bio fermented Functional Products Flexible Production Line:
      • Use existing fermentation tanks and extraction lines to build a new extraction line for producing 800 t/a of D-chiro-inositol, 300 t/a of coenzyme Q10, and 4,000 t/a of DHA algal oil.
    • 63,000 t/a of Bio food Flexible Production Line:
      • Utilize existing fermentation tanks and upgrade extraction lines to achieve a capacity of 3,000 t/a of calcium propionate and 60,000 t/a of L-malic acid.
    • 24,800 t/a of Amino Acid Products Flexible Production Line:
      • Use existing fermentation tanks and upgrade extraction lines to produce 3,000 t/a of L-arginine, 3,000 t/a of L-isoleucine, 5,000 t/a of L-tryptophan, 5,000 t/a of L-methionine, 5,000 t/a of L-threonine, 300 t/a of L-hydroxyproline, 500 t/a of L-histidine hydrochloride, 1,000 t/a of L-proline, 1,000 t/a of L-cysteine, and 1,000 t/a of glycine.
    • Production Process:
      • The process involves three main stages: seed cultivation, fermentation, and extraction.
      • Fermentation broth is produced by fermenting strains using glucose, yeast extract, and nitrogen-containing materials.
      • The broth is then treated through acidification, ceramic membrane filtration, crystallization, centrifugation, and drying to obtain the final products.
    • Labor quota: 102 new employees.
    • Working system: Four-shift three-rotation system, 360 working days totaling 8,640 hours per year.
    • Construction period: about 9 months (To start in Jul. 2025)

According to the environmental acceptance report publicized on 20 Jun., Phase II of 1 million t/a of starch sugars project by Guangzhou Shuangqiao Co., Ltd. (Guangzhou Shuangqiao) has been completed.

  • Location: No. 1, Taiyangsheng Road, Hengli Town, Nansha District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province
  • Investment: USD0.2 billion (RMB1.48 billion), of which USD17.5 million (RMB125.5 million) is for environmental protection.
  • Product plan: 100,000 t/a of beer syrup, 200,000 t/a of glucose syrup, 600,000 t/a of HFCS
  • Key raw material: 1,003,500 t/a of 86% food-grade starch.
  • Progress:
    • Started construction: Apr. 2020
    • Completion: 25 Jul., 2024.
    • Commissioning: 26 Jul., 2024 -25 Jul., 2025.
    • On-site acceptance monitoring: 13-14 May, 2025.

 

At present, the 1 million t/a of starch sugars project of Guangzhou Shuangqiao has been completed and put into production with a capacity of 200,000 t/a of beer syrup, 400,000 t/a of glucose syrup and 900,000 t/a of HFCS.

 

On 4 Jun., the environmental impact report for the technical transformation project of the starch sugar products production line by Shuangqiao (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd. (Shuangqiao Guangzhou), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Guangzhou Shuangqiao, was publicized on an environmental protection platform.

  • Nature: Reconstruction, expansion & technical upgrading

Candida Utilis Protein

Fuyang Starch’s Candida Utilis Protein Project

Shandong Fuyang Biological Starch Co., Ltd. (Fuyang Starch) currently uses most of its evaporated and concentrated corn steep liquor for corn fiber spraying and external sales.

This limits the added value of corn steep liquor and increases the burden on the company’s wastewater treatment system. Consequently, Fuyang Starch has decided to develop downstream products by constructing a Candida utilis protein production project, based on its existing production capacity.

On 13 May, the public notice of the environmental impact assessment documents for its Candida utilis protein project was publicized again prior to the approval.

 

Project overview

  • Nature: Reconstruction
  • Location: Pingyuan Economic Development Zone, Shandong Province
  • Total investment: USD2.8 million (RMB 20 million)
  • Construction content:
    • The project will rely on the existing corn steeping and pulp system, warehouse, and public auxiliary works of Fuyang Starch.
    • It will also utilize the fermentation system of the existing erythritol production workshop of Shandong Fuyang Biological Technology Co., Ltd. (the parent company of Fuyang Starch, located within the same factory complex).
    • The corn steeping system and the erythritol workshop’s fermentation system will be upgraded.
    • Over ten sets of new equipment will be added, including a forced circulation evaporator, a thick pulp tank, a pelletizing bed, a cooling bed, and a packaging system.
    • Once completed, the existing erythritol product line of Shandong Fuyang Biological Technology Co., Ltd. will be discontinued.
  • Product plan: 30,000 t/a of Candida utilis protein.
  • Key raw materials: 8,820 t/a of 10% corn steep liquor.
  • Labor quota: No new employees
  • Working system: Three 8hr shifts per day, 330 working days per year.
  • Construction period: The project is expected to be completed by June 2025.

Global Bio-Chem Forms Strategic Partnership for Synthetic Biology Innovation

On 20 May, Global Bio-Chem Technology Group Co., Ltd. (Global Bio-Chem) entered into a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Hefei Hochen Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (Hefei Hochen).

The agreement was signed by Changchun Hongcheng Biochemical Materials Technology Development Co., Ltd. (Hongcheng Biotechnology), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Global Bio-Chem.

 

The collaboration will see both parties utilize their strengths in synthetic biology to drive the development of Jilin Province’s biomanufacturing industry, with a focus on key industrial applications within the province.

By integrating Global Bio-Chem’s expertise in technology scaling, process optimization, production flow design, and cost control with Hefei Hochen’s capabilities in gene design, strain construction, and metabolic pathway optimization, the partnership aims to advance the industrial application of synthetic biotechnology in the amino acid field, thereby enhancing the market competitiveness of both entities.

 

In line with the strategic cooperation plan, Global Bio-Chem and Hefei Hochen will establish and jointly operate a synthetic biology pilot platform, utilizing the research center and pilot facilities at Global Bio-Chem’s Xinglongshan production base.

The base’s R&D facilities encompass approximately 10,000 square meters of factory space and workshops, along with four R&D centers dedicated to biochemistry, bio-fermentation, food, and animal protection. Additionally, the base features a bio-fermentation product pilot workshop equipped with seven biochemical pilot facilities.

 

Global Bio-Chem’s Xinglongshan production base is currently suspended. As reported in the company’s 2024 annual report, Global Bio-Chem has been actively seeking business allies or investors to participate in the operation of its production base.

The company views the strategic cooperation framework agreement and the proposed joint operation of the pilot platform with Hefei Hochen as the initial step toward gradually resuming operations and production at the Xinglongshan base. This initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen working capital in the long term.

Furthermore, the strategic cooperation framework offers a valuable opportunity for all parties to leverage their respective resources and expertise to create mutual benefits and synergies.

 

Hefei Hochen specializes in integrating synthetic biology with cutting-edge delivery technologies, focusing on the development of bio-based chemicals, specialty amino acids, and high-value active ingredients.
